Google Business Profile Mistakes Costing Greenwich Businesses Enquiries
If you run a business in Greenwich and you have never properly set up your Google Business Profile, you are almost certainly losing enquiries to competitors who have. Google Business Profile is Google’s free tool for managing how your business appears in local search results and on Google Maps, and for many small businesses it is the single most important local SEO asset they own — more influential, day to day, than anything on the website itself. Yet most profiles are set up once, in a hurry, and never looked at again.
Below are the most common Google Business Profile mistakes we see Greenwich businesses make, and a short checklist you can run through today, for free, without hiring anyone.
Why Google Business Profile Matters So Much for Local SEO
When someone searches for a service “near me” or alongside a place name like Greenwich, Google leans heavily on Business Profile data to decide which businesses to show in the map pack above the normal search results. A profile that is complete, accurate and active gives Google more confidence that your business is real, relevant and currently trading — and a profile that is thin, inconsistent or abandoned gives Google a reason to rank someone else instead. No one, including Google itself, can promise a particular ranking position. What is within your control is making sure nothing on your own profile is actively working against you.
Common Google Business Profile Mistakes
- Inconsistent business details. If your business name, address or phone number on Google Business Profile does not exactly match what is on your website and other directories, that inconsistency can undermine the trust signals Google uses for local results.
- The wrong primary category. Many businesses pick a category when they first claim their listing and never revisit it. If your services have changed, or you chose a category that does not quite describe what you do, you may be missing searches that should be finding you.
- No photos, or stale ones. A profile with no interior shots, team photos or examples of completed work gives a potential customer in Greenwich very little reason to choose you over a competitor with a fuller profile.
- Reviews that go unanswered. Replying to reviews, including less favourable ones, shows prospective customers — and Google — that the business is actively managed. Leaving reviews unanswered for months is a visible sign of neglect.
- Business hours that are wrong or out of date. Incorrect hours are a common source of lost trust and wasted journeys, and they are one of the easiest things to fix in a couple of minutes.
- Ignoring the Q&A and messaging features. Unanswered questions sit publicly on your profile for anyone to see, including people who are not going to message you to chase an answer themselves.
- No link back to the right page. Some profiles link to a homepage when a specific service page would answer the searcher’s question faster and give them a reason to stay on the site.
- Treating it as “set and forget.” Business Profile rewards activity. A profile nobody has touched in a year looks exactly like what it is.
A Five-Minute Self-Audit
You do not need specialist tools to check most of this. Log into Google Business Profile (it is free, directly from Google, and separate from Google Search Console, which is also free and worth having) and work through this list:
- Does the name, address and phone number match your website exactly, including how the street name is written?
- Is your primary category still the best description of your main service?
- When did you last add a photo?
- Do you have any reviews without a reply?
- Are your opening hours correct for this week, including any holiday changes?
- Does your website link go to the most useful page for a new visitor, not just the homepage?
If more than two or three of those make you wince, that is normal — and it is also exactly where the quickest wins usually are.
Where Your Website Still Does the Heavy Lifting
Google Business Profile can get a Greenwich business noticed, but it is the website that has to close the deal once someone clicks through. A profile pointing to a slow, outdated or hard-to-navigate site will still lose the enquiry. This is where local SEO stops being a free five-minute task and becomes a question of how the website itself is built: whether the right local landing pages exist, whether the site loads quickly on a phone, and whether the technical foundations — page titles, structured data, internal linking — actually support what your Business Profile is trying to tell Google.
It is also worth saying plainly what we do not offer: Livicode is not a retainer SEO agency running ongoing campaigns, and we do not manage social media accounts on a client’s behalf. What we do is build and modernise websites with local SEO foundations built in from the start — the technical groundwork that a well-run Google Business Profile needs to point back to. For businesses already running a CMS who just need the existing site kept current, consistent with their Business Profile details, and technically sound, that falls under ongoing CMS and platform support rather than a new build.
Livicode Tech Solutions has spent 10+ years building websites for businesses across Greenwich, Lewisham, Bexley, Dartford and Bromley, with local SEO foundations built in from the start rather than bolted on afterwards. If your Google Business Profile is bringing people to a website that is not giving them a reason to stay, tell us about it — no obligation, and no assumption that the answer has to be expensive.
